How to Decorate Your Fireplace

Looking for hot ideas on how to deck out your fireplace? Gather around for our top fireplace designs. Heat up your style with home decor, available at Macy’s. Shop brands we love including JLA Home, Global Goods Partners, Trademark Global and Uttermost.

  1. Showcase your wall decor above your mantel. From paintings to decorative scroll panels, make one large piece of wall decor the focal point of your living room. Spotlight this piece by placing sconces or pendant lighting at either side.

2. Light up your fireplace with candles. You can either make an arrangement of candles inside your fireplace or on your mantel. To keep this look interesting, we recommend getting candles of varying heights and widths. Place smaller candles in votives and larger candles in pillar candle holders. For trending style, lanterns are must-have candle holders.

3. Hang a mirror above your mantel. They’re a chic way to make your living room appear larger. What kind of mirror should you get? Think outside the box and get a sunburst or round mirror. For a classic feel, look for silver-tone finishes. Get a glam look with gold-tone and brass styles.

4. Create a gallery wall above your mantel. You don’t have to have one large piece of wall art; gather up your smaller images for a unique display. For a coordinated look, use photo frames that are the same color.

5. Add a fireplace screen. It will lend a refined feel to your living room while preventing fires. The screen helps keep ashes and embers from escaping your fireplace. It also protects children and pets from entering the danger zone. For a traditional space, we suggest a fireplace screen with ornate scrolling detail in an iron finish. Fireplace screens with geometric details and brass finishes will perfectly accent a modern design.

6. Jump onto the coastal design wave. Add blue, white and nautical elements to your fireplace for an “it” look. Use arrangements of seaside-inspired decorative vases, candles and figurines to decorate your mantel.

7. Bookend your fireplace with bookcases. You can create a library in your living room with all your favorite books. Bookshelves also make exceptional display areas for family photos, artwork, souvenirs and decorative pieces.

8. Go green with plants. Bring nature indoors with large plants at either end of your fireplace or smaller ones on your mantel. Don’t be afraid to use faux plants—we heart how they’re so low maintenance.

9. Time to update your design. Place a large wall clock above your mantel for a striking statement. Want a look that’s a bit more eclectic? You could group a bunch of smaller wall clocks above your mantel. If you already have wall decor, perhaps you can get a mantel clock instead.

10. Do you have a fireplace TV stand? Top off your TV stand with framed family photos, decorative vases or candles. We suggest placing items at either end of the TV to frame it. If you still have a DVD collection, you can house those on the shelves at either side of your fireplace. These shelves are also a standard place for books. Keep warm and cozy on!
